How can we effectively remove previous stain from rough cut oak cabin stairs and refinish them evenly for a cohesive look?

Hey there! Seeking a bit of guidance here. We’re currently renovating the stairs in our old cabin, and they’re made of rough-cut oak that’s a bit warped. We’ve tried planing them as flat as we can and sanding them multiple times. Any tips on how to remove the stain from the saw marks or suggestions for refinishing them evenly with stain, paint, woodburning, or any other ideas? We’d appreciate any help you can offer. Thanks a bunch!

Aren’t you concerned when a 300-pound person walks on a certain area of the steps and makes those cracks bigger?

Ruby Maestas

They’re not hanging over

Tammy Jennings

So? you really think that stepping on a crack won’t make it bigger, considering it’s wood and how it ages with temperature changes in your home? okay, never mind haha

Tyrone Medina

Those seem to be 2.5 inches thick, they won’t move, maybe not even an elephant emoji

Tammy Jennings

Wood still shrinks, especially if there are cracks, but oh well haha. Let me put it this way, would you invest in a house with cracks in the stairs?

Tyrone Medina

Yes, if they are 4.5 inches thick oak, the elephant in my previous comment wouldn’t have any effect

Tammy Jennings

Yeah but if you were purchasing that home and the owner mentioned exactly what you’re saying, you would probably be like ‘nah, that’s not true’ haha

Jaqueline Ayala

I must be crazy because I actually prefer them as they are. I know that doesn’t really help 😂🤷‍♂️

Jaqueline Ayala

If you’re worried about the cracks, you could try your hand at installing some dovetail keys (butterfly joints, bow ties, etc.) to add some stability to the wood.

I’d suggest applying watco danish oil just the way it is. The clear one. It will enhance the color and also help seal and strengthen the wood a bit. If you’re still not satisfied, you can always try using a stain.

Ruby Maestas

They look fantastic

If you’re able to take them out, consider running them through a planer. It seems like the crack doesn’t extend all the way through, so you might want to flip them over. Keep in mind that planing them will remove the saw marks.

Square off with resin and marine sealant.

It’s a cabin with wood that has character. I wouldn’t change or alter it unless it’s very rough and you enjoy walking barefoot.

Patricia Davies

I totally agree. I think it looks great as it is. Just let it age naturally.

Sönke Simons

Absolutely especially if it’s in a cabin

Lucy Gonzales

Just leave it as it is. Maybe apply some oil. They look amazing as they are.

Keep running it through the planer until you’re happy with it.

The rugged, rough, “unfinished look” is fantastic… but if you prefer a smoother finish and want to remove the existing one, just keep planing and sanding. Then apply stain followed by a clear coat. Simple!
