How can we effectively close the gap in the bedroom wall left from removing old trim, should we fill it with wood first or use fiber tape and joint compound?

Hey, so we’re tackling the bedroom walls and came across this issue when we took off the outdated trim around the door from the 90s. There’s this gap that we need to figure out how to fix. Should we use fiber tape and joint compound for it? Or do we need to fill it with wood before doing that?

Are you reinstalling the trim?

Hunter Gonzales

Thinking of adding trim around the door? It’s common to have a gap. However, there are seamless trim kits available for a flush appearance without door trim

Hunter Gonzales

Then there’s no need to fill that gap. It’s a standard gap design. The rough framing opening is always larger than the door frame to allow for adjustments.

Silvia Mireles

Why do you think it needs to be closed? Trim covers it.

Lisa Olson

Make sure to get some new trim for the door

Frederick Myers

It’s a common occurrence. Just use trim

Ivonne Nieto

You could simply install the new trim over it

Julia Morris

You’ll definitely keep the door stronger and avoid potential issues by filling it with shims or dowels before applying compound or mud

Loretta Wallace

I see shims on the right side every couple of feet – .

Loretta Wallace

Make sure to reattach the door casing, also known as door trim.

Kathy Frazier

No, that’s pretty standard for interior doors.

Sofia Chow

It’s fairly standard, but you could use foam if you prefer. Door casing is designed to hide any gaps.

Mabel Ferguson

Take a look at almost any door worldwide. It requires door casing for a finished look. In some cases, standard trim may not fit, requiring a carpenter to customize the width.

Mabel Ferguson

Nope, that’s pretty standard. For exterior doors, you usually use expandable foam like reat Stuff. I wouldn’t recommend using it here because it can expand and push out the door jams.

Dianne Patterson

The rough opening is created when framing a house and is slightly larger than the door to allow for adjustment when installing the door using shims. This is a common practice in most builds. No immediate action is necessary, as the trim will conceal it.

Albert May

‘t forget to reinstall the trim. It serves a purpose.
