How can we create a quick and easy statement wall to save time on patching and sanding the chipping plaster in our new house?

My boyfriend and I recently purchased our very first home. We noticed there’s a cool half-finished mural on the wall next to the front door. The plaster is starting to chip, so we’re thinking of doing a statement wall to save us from having to do a lot of patching and sanding.

Do you have any suggestions on how we could create a simple yet eye-catching statement wall? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Try covering it up, seems like it might be tweekers

Gustav Green

Just lightly sand it and then apply 2 coats of paint

Adem Gönültaş

Sand it down and then give it a fresh coat of paint.

You can find a variety of removable wallpaper options, ranging from murals to photography to traditional patterns. Fill in any holes in the wall and choose something that matches your personal style.

The simplest option would be to use beadboard to cover it up, and then paint over it!

Laurie Singh

Hey , I agree! Something along those lines with paintings/mirror, and a small table with decorative items on it!

Laurie Singh

Scratch the table idea! Looks like there’s no space for it after all.

Lucy Freeman

My choice would be to go with shiplap.

Not sure what your style preferences are, but no matter what I would suggest fixing the wall, giving it a quick sanding, and if it hasn’t been painted before, applying at least a coat of primer. There are so many possibilities for where you could take this.

Asmaa Roes

Shiplap panel available at Home Depot for $37 in a 4 x 8 size.

Benjamin Nicolas

I really like the look of the breadboard! Plus, it’s way easier to put up compared to shiplap.

Minea Peura

Consider shiplap or board and batten for a unique touch that’s easy to achieve. Shiplap allows for customization of gap width, while board and batten offers versatility with patterns. Congratulations on your new home!

Regina Masson

Hey , I also like shiplap, but it might not suit this house, maybe wallpaper instead?

Jeanette Vargas

Can you please find a new wallpaper for the living room?

Sienna Smith

Beadboard is definitely the quickest and simplest option. If you choose to sand it down, I recommend checking out peel and stick murals on Amazon.

Aleksi Ylitalo

Sure, just sand down any rough spots, fill in small holes with spackle or drywall, sand it smooth, and then paint.

Spoonflower has some really cool wallpaper options with unique prints that you can even stick on easily with peel and stick!

Are you planning to keep the wood paneling in the background of this photo? It could be a fun project to update it with wallpaper or a fresh coat of paint. If you want to avoid the mess of removing the paneling, you could cover it with thin plywood and then apply the wallpaper. In our house, we transformed a wall by adding thin layers of concrete to give it an industrial, lime-washed look.

Khalid Dragland

Hey, I know this picture isn’t the greatest, but check out our concrete wall in the house. It was actually really easy and didn’t take much time at all. The plywood with wallpaper option would be a breeze too. Just grab some moulding for the top, bottom, and corners if you’d like, but you can simply caulk them before putting up the wallpaper. Then just stick the wallpaper on and you’re good to go. Just remember to sand down the plywood to make it smooth. It may sound like a lot, but trust me, it’s not as difficult as it seems. Plus, it would be less labor-intensive than dealing with plaster.

I’m really impressed by the mural, but a fun peel-and-stick wallpaper could be a great alternative. ‘t forget to include a mirror.

Consider painting a single wall black.

Emily Robinson

Considering a statement wall with a mix of black, chrome, and mirror tile mosaic to complement the wood and mirror. ‘t forget to backlight the mirror with an LED kit for added effect. A bold wallpaper design could also work well

Try extending the new wood paneling onto the ceiling for a cohesive look

Tamires Ribeiro

How about painting it black? It would complement the color of your door and closet really well

Ayman Van Kammen

What kind of style are you into?

Ayman Van Kammen

There is an abundance of gorgeous wallpaper. What is the width of the area?

Ayman Van Kammen

If you’re not up for repairing the plaster, you could consider putting up 1/4 finished plywood and wallpapering over it instead.

Ayman Van Kammen

The plywood would be 48” wide, you can frame it at the ends.

Ayman Van Kammen

One idea could be to get two pieces of plywood 3″ x 8′ for each end, then wallpaper over it and add a frame if needed at the cut line.

Egon Eichler

If it were me, I would go for bead board or shiplap over the wall after priming it. Can’t have creepy imagery in the house!

Ava Caldwell

Tiling could be an option as it is not too difficult to do

Vandana Shayana

Check out Home Depot or Lowes for large panels that you can easily nail to the wall. They have a variety of designs to choose from
