How can I update the surface of my front door that was previously closed off with a glued wood block by the previous residents?

Hey there! I’m choosing to stay anonymous because I prefer to keep my group posts separate from my friends list. I’m looking to give my front door a makeover on my own, but the mailbox was left in a pretty bad state by the previous owners. It looks like they used a large wood block and painted over it. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can improve this? Thanks in advance!
After painting, I’d make sure to add the house numbers to it.
Do you think you could pry it off? Maybe cover it with a decorative plate?
After painting, consider making the mailbox a focal point by attaching a metal piece with the address for added functionality.
What a lovely idea!

It’s really up to you, but I think you have some fantastic ideas.
I would suggest putting your house number or a similar decorative item on it.
I totally agree. The people who live next to me have ‘Hello’ written on their door and I think it’s wonderful!
This is the option that I would go for. Great selections.
Take out the block and fill it up with wood and bondo. And then you can add a metal plate in that spot, and a bigger one at the bottom of the door. Ones that go well with your hardware.

Consider adding vinyl letters that say “Welcome” to greet guests.
Sorry for the inconvenience, but the front door mailbox needs attention.
I really like the idea of the house number mentioned above
Totally agreed. The first thing that came to mind was the address. It’s a favorite of delivery drivers.
I think putting a mailbox back in would be a good idea
If you’re married, maybe you could use both your and your husband’s initials
Consider adding your house numbers to make it look more deliberate.
How about a brass plate with your family’s monogram on it? You might be able to find something special by ordering from Etsy.
I’m a bit more laid-back than some, but I find things like this enjoyable.
Let’s take out the unattractive piece and put in a flush mounted one instead. Then seal it, sand it, and paint it.
First of all, going anonymous when posting in groups to prevent your friends from seeing is a brilliant idea! I might have to give that a try!
The brass mailbox is back in place. It really gives the door a special touch.
I’m all about adding decorative touches. There are some great suggestions here! It’ll definitely make your door stand out
How about a brass plaque with your address? It will give your door a stylish touch. I’d go for a London flat aesthetic.

Check out a personalized door number plaque and add it to your door. (I got one for my home and it looks amazing)
Consider putting a ‘no soliciting’ sign on the mailbox.
If you’re looking to revive the mailbox, you can scrape off the old paint, take out the wood blocking it, give it a good clean, search for new mailbox slots, and then paint the door. If you prefer to keep it closed, consider getting a plate with your house number or last name engraved on it.
I really like my mailbox opening. It gives the house some charm. I would definitely remove that old board and put in a new slot door.
How might your personal relationships be affected if your friends and family discovered you were thinking about painting?
Haven’t any of your friends ever entered through your front door?
Heather Joy LOL 😂
I’m happy to have brought some brightness to your day!
I love all of these ideas! Thank you! I’m definitely going to use them!
I really like all of these ideas! Thank you so much! I plan on using this for sure!
Wait, you mean you’re keeping this front door update a secret from your friends? 🤯
Remove the block, trim it to fit in the hole. Fill with adhesive, sand, and paint. By the way, maybe someone on your friends list can assist you with this.
House numbers?
Remove the small square they used as a cover and create a larger one to span from left to right. Leave the vertical sides uncovered. I think it would be nice to reattach the brass mail slot and cover it on the opposite side.
House number painted on it!

If you’re painting, prying the cover off and using wood filler should work just fine. Give it a try! 😄

You have the option to sand it down with a belt sander or create parallel/level rails for your router to remove a thin layer. Once that’s done, just sand it until it disappears.
Seems like they used wood glue to attach it, right? You might want to use a Dremel tool to carefully cut through the glued section and then use a chisel to pry it off. After that, just sand it down. Just make sure to have a mailbox cover handy if you plan on restoring it.
By the way, only your friends who are also in the group will be able to see this on their timeline. So if none of your friends are in the group, you’re all set.
I disagree with that statement. I belong to a public group for the type of camper we own, and every time I make a post, a friend interacts with it. I understand where the original poster is coming from.
Courtney Bailey, I’m dealing with the same problem
Courtney Bailey, they’re most likely part of the group
It’s all good,
Hey, , I actually looked it up myself and got the opposite result, so my bad.
No worries, !
Incorrect. When you post in a public group, anyone who is “following” you will see the post. It’s important to be cautious in that regard.
All friends have access to public groups. Meta needs to address this issue, but they are not concerned about visibility
Turn this mailbox cover into a unique house number.
You guys seem more concerned about why he posted anonymously instead of offering to help him with his door. So funny 😂 🤣🤣
I’d search for a metal ornament to add to it. Perhaps something that complements the door knobs.
Smooth out the surface
How about installing a new mailbox?
You know what would actually look great in this space? Just a simple brass rectangle.
How about a brass welcome sign?
