How can I update the back of my 25-year-old house on a golf course without conflicting with the colonial theme?

Hey everyone! Just wanted to introduce myself – I’m new to this group and I’m really into decorating and networking. My husband and I moved into a 25-year-old house on a golf course about 4 years ago, and we absolutely love it. The only thing is, it definitely needs some updating. My husband is not a fan of change, but for me, it’s a must! Our house is mostly brick on three sides, but the back is vinyl and visible from the golf course, so it’s pretty important to me. Our deck is on the smaller side, the white color is looking a bit dirty despite our efforts to keep it clean, and I think adding shutters (maybe in white with white trim) could really spruce things up. I’m open to any advice or ideas on how to improve the back of our house without straying too far from the colonial theme. I’ll post three pictures – the front of the house, the back, and a picture I found of a vinyl house with colors I like. Thanks in advance for any input you all may have – hopefully I can come up with a plan that my husband will also like!

I don’t really have any advice, but I just wanted to say that I absolutely love your home now! 😍

I noticed there are actually four pictures, not three, and the two inspiration images have some noticeable differences that could be important. One has a colonial vibe while the other is more farmhouse. I recommend sticking with black shutters and possibly adding arches over the first-floor windows for consistency. Also, opt for a bluish gray siding instead of a greenish tint. If the electric box area looks discolored, you might want to focus on fixing that one spot while keeping the rest white. The deck seems a bit small compared to the house – could you transform it into more of a porch? Enhancing the proportions with a patio and surrounding shrubbery could also be beneficial.

To create a cohesive look, maintain black shutters and think about adding arches over the first-floor windows for a colonial style. Consider a bluish grey siding to avoid any undertone issues. Address any discoloration near the electric box separately and keep the siding white in other areas. Turn the deck into a porch-like structure that matches the house’s proportions with the addition of a patio and some shrubbery. Are you planning any renovations inside the house?
