How can I update my grandparents’ indoor window frames filled with staples and nail holes before painting?

I’ve been taking my time remodeling and updating different parts of my house, which used to belong to my grandparents. I’m focusing on sprucing up the indoor window frames right now. My grandma used to go all out with Christmas decorations on them, so they’re covered in staples and nail holes. I’m not sure if they were stained before or if this is the original wood. Do you think I should use wood putty to fill in the holes? And should I sand them down before painting? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

If the holes in the wood look stained, you can use wood filler to fill them in. You may need to sand them down to bare wood or use a stripping agent based on how deeply the stain has penetrated.
