How can I smooth out the bumps from welding on the poles in my basement before wrapping them with pole wrap?

Hey everyone,
I’m thinking of wrapping the poles in the basement with pole wrap (as shown in the second picture). But the poles have these bumps with welding (I think) like you can see in the first picture. What’s the best way to smooth out those bumps? Thanks for your help 🥰

A grinder is the most suitable tool for the job.

We recently wrapped one of these poles in a rental. Instead of making it round, we decided to box it. We created a square wooden frame with the exact size we wanted for our box. After drilling a hole in the center, we cut it in half. Each piece resembled a wooden block arch that kids often play with. We then attached it around the pole at the top and bottom and secured the sides to the wooden frame. I might be confusing you with my explanation. I wish I had taken pictures to show you now.

I boxed them with wood in my previous home.

This is a structural component and should not be altered by grinding or similar methods.

To create this, I recommend cutting a wooden ring in half, planking the rings in two pieces, and assembling them over the pole using nail strips. They should be slightly larger than the pole to ensure a neat finish.

For a cap similar to the one in the 2nd picture, consider sizing up to ensure enough space to cover the plates. Another option is boxing it in with a square column, just make sure the box is bigger than the plate.

Use a grinder and a flap disc to smooth it out.

Do you happen to own a grinder?

Seems to resemble more of an epoxy or similar substance, but even if it’s a weld, you can remove the excess by grinding. If I shared this photo in a welding group, the comments would go crazy about how poor the weld is due to the build-up. Just take your time and focus on the areas with excess material, and you’ll be okay.

Took a bit more effort, but here’s how I helped out a customer
