How can I salvage my daughter’s glitter-covered ceiling disaster and turn it into a galaxy-themed masterpiece?

How can we fix this? My 8-year-old daughter really wanted to help me add some glittery clear coat to her matte black ceiling. Unfortunately, due to some pressure differences, we ended up with way too much glitter pooling in certain spots. I tried using a sponge to even it out, but it just made things look clumpy. Now it kind of looks like a kid went wild with a glitter glue pen on the wall!

I attempted to add a light coat in the less glittery areas, but it just made things worse. I even tried using a wire brush on a drill to break up some of the glitter concentration, but all it did was scuff the clear coat. Sanding didn’t help at all.

Is there any hope of salvaging this? My poor daughter just wanted her ceiling to look like a galaxy. I have some clear coat, matte black paint for the base, more glitter, an orbital sander, wire brush attachments for the drill, and the determination to make this right for my little one.

My buddy painted her walls and it turned out like this. They gave it another go a week later with way more glitter than before, thinking it couldn’t hurt, and it was a success. Unfortunately, no photos though 🤷🏽‍♀️🤣 If you’re feeling adventurous, maybe add extra glitter. She used silver, black, and purple with clear paint.

Nicholas Stanley

How about sticking with this design or perhaps painting it black again and experimenting with splattering some luminescent paint for a galaxy look that glows in the dark?

Walter Vedvik

For a galaxy feel, try using tiny jars of white, pink, blue, and purple. Water them down and sponge them on top of the black. Then redo the glitter.

Walter Vedvik

In sections where the black is more ‘light,’ the colors would adhere better…

Flora Pinto

I totally agree with , I believe this is a brilliant concept!

Harper Martin

You’re such an awesome mom, great job! ❤️

Harper Martin

But you know what? I actually do think it looks pretty cool as it is!

Noah Barnes

Totally! I would totally deck it out with glow in the dark stars and those space projectors!

Christine Reed

Me too!! I hardly allow glitter inside. 😆

Justine Roger

To be honest, maybe it’s because we’re not meeting in person, but this looks really impressive!

Sometimes you need to take a step back – what you see as imperfections, many of us view as something truly remarkable.

It’s strange how that happens sometimes

Şuheda Tegelaar

I agree with you. It kind of gives off a leather ceiling vibe to me. That’s what I initially thought it was!

Xavier Fernández

That’s exactly what I was thinking!

Stina Reiersen

Totally agree! The design is really impressive!

Flora Pinto

Consider sponging on additional colors and adding adhesive glow in the dark stars for an extra touch. Embrace the intentional unevenness!

Why not try experimenting with a scrap panel painted black and testing out different techniques like rolling or sponging? If you want to set realistic expectations, the Milky Way is worth exploring.

You’re quite courageous for tackling a project like this! I can only imagine the amount of glitter scattered around. Best of luck!

Harper Jean-Baptiste

I agree that it looks like leather in the pictures and it’s nice. However, if your little one isn’t a fan, you can always practice on a poster board until you achieve a look that satisfies everyone, then repaint and apply the right topcoat. Best of luck!

I recently tried something similar in my own living room. I used flat white ceiling paint and mixed ultra fine glitter into the gallon of paint. After stirring to combine, I painted the ceiling as usual. The result was perfect – it sparkles in direct light but is subtle in ambient light. Have you thought about mixing the glitter directly into your flat black paint to achieve a more evenly distributed glitter effect? I imagine glitter in black paint would create a much more noticeable look than mine in white paint.

If you’re searching for a solution, consider trying the approach I took instead of what you’ve already attempted.

Tracy Rivera

Your wall looks amazing!
I’m not entirely certain if it’s because it’s black, but we attempted to mix in the paint initially. However, it was hardly noticeable – like we had to shine a flashlight on a specific area and position ourselves oddly to notice. So, I wanted more glitter, and this was my attempt… which didn’t turn out as expected!
Your wall is absolutely stunning

Bernice Chambers

Hey , have you considered using flat black as a base and then mixing the glitter into a clear or translucent coat to apply on top?

Tracy Rivera

Hey , so here is the outcome of that. 😬
At first, we attempted to mix the glitter directly into the paint, but we couldn’t see much, so we opted for adding glitter to the clear coat instead – and this is what we got. Haha

Bernice Chambers

Hey , sorry I read your post before commenting, but I didn’t realize that was your initial layer.

Luz Flores

It’s really enjoyable to work with this product.

Élodie Brunet

You should wait a few days for it to cure. After that, apply very thin layers of the glitter clear using a small roller with a short nap or foam.

Neuci Moreira

If you’re not into the full multicolor galaxy look, you could try using a can of spray glitter on the middle of the ceiling. ‘t worry about the edges, just go for it and create a galaxy shape or spirals.

Niva Bhardwaj

How about some photos of the wheels? 😁

Ronald Porter

Oh definitely! Show me the pics!

It seems like outer space to me;)

Mads Jørgensen

I think it looks amazing. Maybe adding a touch of purple or blue to the lighter areas could help if that’s what’s bothering you

Gilberto Casanova

I think you all nailed it!

Tine Tofte

I love how it turned out!

Elli Aalto

Try using a rough sponge to incorporate additional black speckles.

Ellen Griffin

How about getting stencils of planets and stars and such and just have fun painting it to resemble a galaxy with that as the backdrop? I recall my bedroom had a blue ceiling with white stencilled stars, and my mom hung fairy lights so at night it appeared as though the stars were shining. I believe you have a solid starting point to build on 😊

Michael Stanley

Perhaps consider leaving it as is and adding some LEDs around the ceiling perimeter. The lights could help make it less noticeable and give it a more galaxy-like feel.

Izolita Moreira

Oh, that’s a good suggestion!

Izolita Moreira

Oh, and don’t forget to add in some of those sticky stars mentioned in the comment above. That would be great

Tracy Rivera

Oh wow, that’s really interesting. Her brother was just talking about getting programmable LED’s to place in between the slats on his slat wall- so I might as well do both 😂

Loïc Petit

The universe is really like that it’s not a uniform distribution of stars

Pirmin Wirtz

I’m not sure, but I believe it still looks fantastic even if it didn’t turn out exactly as expected. And seriously, you’re an amazing mom for going the extra mile to make this happen for your daughter and involving her in the process! Those memories are more valuable than any perfect project! 🥰

Venla Kivela

I got these for my son’s room and they work wonders.

Venla Kivela

I combined these two.

Yolanda Garica

Seems good to me.

Magadara Gutirya

Your project looks fantastic! The lack of uniformity actually makes it look more realistic. Such a great idea! Well done!

Hannah Garcia

Adding LED lights is a great idea! Mixing them with glass beads of different colors can create a really cool effect. I’m sure whatever you decide to do will turn out amazing! You’re a fantastic mom for encouraging your daughter’s creativity in her own space.

Christopher Hale

I say just leave it as is. Take a paintbrush, dip it in white, navy, and purple paint, then flick it across the wall to create a more galaxy-like appearance

Samuel Stanley

Hey, I totally agree with you! What I usually do is apply white acrylic paint on a regular paintbrush and then tap on my finger to create a splatter effect. I also like to use a toothbrush by pulling back the bristles to make a fine spray of stars in my artwork.

Barteld Bruintjes

I used these products from Amazon on a dark blue wall, and there are plenty of options available. I think keeping it as it is will make your daughter happy to have been involved in the project.

Beatriz Hernández

The pictures look amazing, I wouldn’t change a thing without seeing it in person.

Mary Sanchez

The galaxy isn’t evenly distributed. I think it looks pretty realistic, but adding a few more stars could really enhance it with some interesting details. 🙂

Gabrielle Nguyen

I’m a fan!

Nishitha Gamskar

Oh, and don’t overlook the glow in the dark stars! Even as an adult, I find them charming in my bedroom at night haha

Natalia Guerrero

You should consider getting one of those ceiling lights that resembles the galaxy. I think it would complement the other suggestions of adding extra details to the painting.
