How can I safely repaint my 1940s steel-framed house with peeling window frames without risking exposure to lead-based paint?

I need to fix my flaking window frames. My house has steel frames from the 1940s – do you think there might be lead paint on them? What’s the safest way for me to repaint them? I don’t want to spend hours sanding if there’s lead paint involved, so how can I get a nice smooth finish without all that effort?

To get a smooth finish, wear a quality mask and scrape thoroughly. Follow up with two coats of oil-based primer, then apply a final coat of high-quality paint. Use a shop vacuum to clean up any paint residue.

I see your point. Scuff and lightly sand with 180 grit sandpaper.
Avoid using a power sander as it could potentially damage the aluminum.
If you’re worried about dust, opt for a sandpaper that can be used with water. Mist the area with a small spray bottle before sanding and wipe with a rag afterward.
Make sure to rinse and dry before applying primer.

Is that made of metal? It appears to be rusty. I suggest power washing off the loose paint, sanding it with a block, and applying rusty metal primer if it’s indeed metal.
