How can I safely remove the unwanted paint from my limestone fireplace and cabinets without causing damage?

We recently purchased a new house and the previous owner decided to paint the cabinets and limestone. I’m not a fan of the white color they chose, I preferred how it looked before (see attached picture). I also noticed that they only applied one coat of paint and I have no clue what kind they used.
Does anyone have any tips or product recommendations on how to safely remove the paint from both the limestone and cabinets without causing any damage? I really want to avoid sanding since these aren’t actual wood. Thanks in advance! 😑
I believe that road only goes one way.
Why do people feel the need to paint everything? 😢
Real estate agents suggest brightening up the space to create the illusion of bigger rooms for a quicker sale
Yeah, , you’re right. It’s a bit sad, but it’s the truth.
You know, , making rooms bright and appear larger isn’t a bad idea at all.
Hey , I totally get what you mean! If they had just done a better job, it would be much clearer, but it’s all messy.
They actually have a paint remover that I’ve used before. It softens the paint so you can scrape it off easily. I’m not sure if it would work on stone, but there might be specific products for that. ood luck! I agree, the original look was lovely!
Personally, I think it’s an improvement.
I see your point, but it doesn’t really fit our style and doesn’t match the rest of the lower level. Plus, the paint job is pretty bad up close, so it’ll be a project either way 😔
My mother-in-law has an EV 3000i steamer (it’s like professional-grade). I used it to steam the grout in my kitchen floor, and it ended up steaming the paint off my cabinets (which were painted poorly). I’m now using the steamer to remove all the paint, and it’s working really well! I’d suggest giving it a try on the rock, but I’d recommend doing a patch test on the cabinets first to avoid accidentally damaging them if they absorb the steam.
Thanks so much!
Since limestone is porous, getting rid of all the paint might be impossible. You could attempt a chemical remover, a gentler form of abrasion, or use a heat gun. As for the ‘wood,’ if it’s veneer, you can still try a chemical stripper and sand it carefully to avoid damaging the veneer.
Hey , thank you so much!!
I’d suggest looking into new cabinet doors to establish a starting price. That way, you’ll have a point of comparison before you get frustrated trying to recreate the previous look with paint.
I would suggest keeping it as is and adding some wood or color elements to tie everything together. Dealing with limestone can be a hassle, so it’s best to work with what you have.
Thank you so much 😩
Honestly, I wouldn’t even attempt to remove it. I think it looks good as it is. But then again, I’m not a fan of red-toned cabinets.
You can use sandblasting on the brick and a gel paint stripper or sand, or even both, on the cabinets.
Hey , thanks a bunch!
Hey there !
My husband who paints for a living told me that the rock can’t be fixed, so we have to either remove it or repaint it. As for the cabinets, they can be stripped and stained.
Thanks a lot!
Can use sandblasting to effectively clean the stone
I’d really like to remove the paint from my kitchen cabinets too, but I know it’s a lot of work. I’m worried I might just give up halfway through.
Why not give the Poultice Method a shot? Just make a paste using a paint stripper and absorptive material like powdered clay or diatomaceous earth. Spread it on the painted spot, cover it with plastic wrap, and let it do its thing for a few hours or overnight. The poultice should pull the paint out of the limestone.
Thank you so much, – you’re awesome!
You might have to experiment with different methods. It’s going to be a long and tedious process with several steps and lots of cleanup. When you feel like giving up halfway through, just push through! Stock up on a variety of wire brushes in different sizes – you’re going to need them. Hopefully, the stone won’t get too damaged. ood luck – I also dislike painted stone!
Thank you so much, !
Can we repaint the cabinets a color that you prefer more?
