How can I safely install an awning without damaging the siding and ensuring proper support with a regular drill and finding studs?

Hey there! I have a question for you guys. I’m in the process of installing an awning and I’m wondering if it’s safe to assume that the bottom is all solid wood support or if I should be looking for studs behind the siding. Initially, I thought using the bottom layer as a reference point was the way to go, but now I’m thinking I might need to find the studs for better support since the bracket is a little larger. Do you think a regular drill will be enough if it fits my 1/2 inch drill bit? And if I locate the studs on the interior, can I assume they’ll be in the same spot on the exterior?

Ideally, there should be a band running from the first-floor level up to the second story. Try removing a piece of vinyl siding there and test the theory with a nail.

I wouldn’t recommend attaching anything to vinyl siding, even with wood backing.
