What’s the best way to repair this? There’s a leak at the bottom of the sink where the glue has come loose. Ugh, it’s the kitchen sink!
You have the option to purchase replacement parts. It’s important not to use glue. The item includes a rubber gasket. Simply unscrew the large bolt, remove the old piece, clean the area, and install the new one. R and R

Everything can be taken out and replaced. There is a washer up there. Unscrew everything, then head to the store to get a replacement assembly with a new gasket and some silicone
Use a Dremel tool to cut the lock nut, then use a flat blade screwdriver to split the cut from the Dremel tool. After that, you can get a new basket assembly
You’ll want to use plumbers putty instead of glue
It seems like the basket might be off center from this view. If it is, try loosening the horizontal pipe and trimming it slightly to adjust the basket. Once you apply new plumbers putty, it should be good to go.
How about getting a new basket strainer for 20 dollars?
You should consider getting a new kitchen sink basket strainer.
The glue you see is actually plumbers putty that leaked from the top side where it was installed. Some people opt for 100% silicone instead of plumbers putty, but it can be messy if done incorrectly or when replacement is needed.
You have the option to purchase replacement rubber gaskets and paper, seal and reuse all the metal, or start fresh by buying a new basket strainer.
The basket strainer is probably in good shape. You can remove the nut using a flat head screwdriver and a few taps of a hammer, a basket wrench, or even by hand since it’s already leaking and loose.
If you suspect any damage to the basket assembly, remove it carefully. Clean off all the old plumbers putty residue or silicone from both the parts and the sink. Purchase a new gasket set from the hardware or plumbing store and reinstall it using plenty of plumber putty. Avoid using silicone as it may deteriorate over time. I’ve always had success with putty. Alternatively, you could consider replacing the entire basket set, as they are affordable, come with all necessary seals and gaskets, and most include instructions. Ultimately, it depends on the condition of the old strainer on the top side. If it’s worn out, damaged, or showing signs of wear and tear, it’s best to replace it.
The plumbers putty has completely dried out
