How can I properly prep and paint a non-wood door to achieve a smooth finish, including the best quality paint for easy cleaning with a dog around?

I’m feeling a bit nervous about painting this door. It’s not made of wood. Some of the paint near the doorknob has started to wear away (check out the pics). It has a smooth aluminum texture under the paint. Can anyone share some advice and tips on how to properly fix and prep it? I’m thinking of painting the inside part black, and maybe the other side black or a different color. I’d like to paint it while it’s still hanging on its hinges. I’ve never done this before, so any advice would be greatly appreciated. I also need a high-quality paint that’s easy to clean, as I have a dog.

Make sure to clean well and use a good transfer primer such as ProBlock from Sherwin-Williams. Apply two coats of primer, let it dry for a day, then apply top coats the next day.

Try using a small foam roller for a flawless finish. Your hair will appear sleek and polished.
