How can I prevent mold in my new house by properly sealing the gaps in my master bathtub/shower?

So we just settled into our new place and I’m already pondering some bathroom mysteries 🤔 Check out my master bathtub/shower – there are some gaps around the faucet and spout. After dealing with mold in our last rental, I’m determined to prevent it from happening again. Any advice on how to handle this situation? Would caulk do the trick?

I usually put a line of clear caulk on the top half of the escutcheon plate, from about 8:30 to 3:30. It helps keep water out while still allowing some airflow. Any plumbers out there have thoughts on this? Nothing needed around the handle.

Jon is right – caulk around the area, but avoid going the full 360° because it can trap water.

The valve escutcheon is equipped with a foam gasket to keep water out. As for the spout, you can apply silicone around it, just make sure to leave the very bottom open.

Make sure to caulk around the spout, focusing on the top 3/4 only, since the valve’s trim plate has a seal with a drainage gap at the bottom.
