How can I prevent future damage to my water line from rocks and heavy equipment when placing soil back on top?

Hey, seeking some advice here. So, we had a little mishap with a water line connected to the street. It got crimped, probably from heavy equipment being on top and sharp rocks in the ground pinching the line. All fixed now, but wondering if there’s anything I can do to safeguard the pipe when putting the soil back on top. There are a ton of rocks around. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

To avoid that, the pipes should be placed in clean sand. So the best approach is to remove any visible rocks nearby and fill it with sand until you’re 6″ above the pipes.

By the way, if it’s a sewer pipe next to it, regulations require them to be at least 3′ apart. Just make sure they are not both damaged in the same location simultaneously, and you should be fine.
