How can I optimize my closet space with limited options in my home to keep everything organized and accessible?
Hey there! I’m new around here and could really use some advice on how to make the most of my closet space.
Right now, my clothes are taking over the master closet, while my husband’s stuff has claimed the spare bedroom closet (which will soon become the toddler’s room). We’re in the process of finishing our basement and we’re thinking of moving all the linens down there since we don’t really need them on hand all the time.
Do you have any suggestions for reconfiguring things? I’m torn between closing off the linen closet and using it in the master (though it has a big air duct), or shutting off the toddler’s closet and adding it to the master as a second closet. I’d likely need to get a wardrobe for the little one in that case.
Keeping the house organized is a real struggle with these tiny closets! Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Hey, I have a question for you…have you ever considered downsizing your wardrobe? Do you actually use all the clothes you own? Some items may be seasonal and could be stored away when not in use. A good closet system can help with organizing, but maybe you just have more clothes than you really need!
Jen rosvold-Keenan no worries! I usually store clothes for different seasons. I’m currently in the third trimester of my pregnancy, trying on clothes to see what fits. I agree, I probably have too many clothes – I keep some in storage bins for winter and summer wear. It’s currently that in-between weather where I live 🤷♀️ However, my husband and I still want more closet space in our bedroom to have our own separate spaces, as our current closets are quite small.
You’re entering an exciting phase of life! Trust me, even after returning to your pre-pregnancy weight, you may not be satisfied with how your old clothes fit due to changes in your body!
I would recommend reconsidering the removal of a closet. Without a closet, a room may not be considered a bedroom for appraisal purposes in your area. Alternatively, be prepared to add one back if necessary before selling.
I think the closets are fine as they are, but in the master bedroom, I might consider changing the door swing. For the linen closet, maybe switch the shelving for a different storage solution based on your husband’s needs. Consider under-the-bed storage for your bed and a twin bed with under-the-bed storage for the toddler room. An armoire with a mix of drawers and hanging space could also work. You can always use the extra closet space as needed, but I wouldn’t recommend changing it to face your bedroom for resale purposes – some markets require a closet in a bedroom to be considered as such.
So, about the linen situation… How much linen do you actually have? I know someone who was about to drop $6K on a new linen cabinet. You really only need two sets of sheets per bed – one on the bed and the other as a backup in case of emergencies. Maybe it’s time to declutter, just like my friend! I jokingly offered to help her declutter her cabinets and drawers for $3K, which would be half the cost of the new cabinet. 😄
You make a good point!! I have a collection of placemats and tablecloths handmade by my aunt, which I use for different seasons and holidays. They are absolutely beautiful!
