How can I maximize storage space in my basement while working around the sump pump and incorporating a sleek, non-professional design? Can HVAC ducts be resized for a lower profile without affecting air flow?

I’m looking for some suggestions. I want to finish up some parts of my basement to create more storage space or maybe even an extra room. Right now, I’m thinking about putting shelves around the sump pump, but it’s in an awkward spot right in the middle of the wall. I still need to be able to access it easily, and I plan to install a monitor on it for emergencies.

What are my options here? I don’t need anything too fancy, but I want it to look nice and be able to work around it. The previous owners built a unique room with a closet in the basement, and I can see the frame of the closet. The other half of the basement is my laundry area. I’m hoping to expand the existing room into a larger space for a home office and use the area around the sump pump for bookshelves and storage.

Also, is there a way to make HVAC ducts smaller or less noticeable without affecting airflow?

Decreasing the duct size could mess up your airflow, especially if the duct is already the right size. This is because it would increase back pressure on the supply or return, potentially causing noise in the system due to higher velocity. If you really want to make changes, consider hiring a local HVAC contractor to assess the situation in person, as it’s impossible for someone unfamiliar with your property to provide a definitive answer.

When it comes to shelving, it wouldn’t be hard to build a unit with notched shelves to accommodate existing piping.
