How can I locate studs behind vinyl siding to ensure proper installation of a retractable awning?

Hey there! I’m thinking about putting up a retractable awning on the back of my house, which has vinyl siding. Any tips on figuring out where the studs are from outside? I want to make sure I’m securing the awning to the studs and not just to the OSB sheathing. Thanks in advance for any help or advice you can offer!

I own a stud finder that has a “deep scan” feature. While I’m not completely sure if it will work, it’s simple to remove and reinstall the siding. You can also watch a tutorial on fixing vinyl siding and purchase a tool for around $10 at a major hardware store.

When installing, remove the siding at the designated spot and identify the studs if there is no header present

If the wall section is less than 8’6″, you should mount to the fascia since there is a significant drop in height beyond 8ft. I’ve had to create custom brackets for the 3 I worked on to increase the height, but they were 10 and 12 feet away
