How can I effectively clean and restore my stained tub without causing rust stains, and what is the best product to use for painting the bottom white?

My tub is stained and it’s not looking too great. I’ve tried scrubbing with comet and other cleaners, but it’s still looking dirty. When I use bleach, it brings out a lot of rust color on the porcelain, so then I have to use CLR to get rid of the rust stains.
I’m thinking about painting the bottom of the tub white, but I’m not sure what would be the best option for that. Any thoughts on what I should use?
Give Dawn dish soap, baking soda, and water combo a shot. Apply, leave it for a bit, then scrub away. The enamel might be wearing off, revealing the cast iron underneath
There was this girl Sabrina Lambert who managed to remove a ring stain from my toilet that I couldn’t get rid of with anything else
If the pumice stone doesn’t do the trick in removing everything, you might need to consider resurfacing.
It seems like the tub and tiles are due for a reglazing.
Have you tried using Barkeepers friend or pink stuff with a magic eraser?
The darkness you’re noticing is the metal shining through. If you keep cleaning aggressively, it will fully expose the metal. It’s high time to refinish or get a new tub.
Yep, the tub is in need of reglazing
Give it a nice glaze
To those suggesting to glaze it, how exactly is that done? I have one that resembles this a bit and I’ve been curious for a decade if there’s a method to improve its appearance
They have tub and tile refinishing kits for sale. You need to do a lot of sanding and preparation, but the results are decent. I find Rustoleum to make the best one.
I’ve got a spot that’s about 6 inches in diameter. Do you think it’s possible to fix just that area or would the entire tub need to be done to make it look good? How time-consuming do you think this project would be? I can spare an hour or two but don’t want it to take up 3 hours a day for 3 days. Since we only have one bathroom for our family of 7, I assume it’s something that needs to be done and then left to set for a while, maybe right before going on vacation or something? Thanks!
The whole process is necessary. It takes around 2 hours to clean, then you need to give it some time to cure before wiping the drain area in about 4 hours. After that, it can’t be used for 2-3 days to fully cure.
Thank you very much! Trying this in our house might be a bit of a challenge, but I’m going to research it further.
Oh man, having only one shower can be tough. But in the end, it was definitely worth it!
I tried this product on the stains in my tub and sink that have been there for years, and it worked wonders.
Baking soda is really incredible
Are you referring to Bar Keepers Friend or the pink stuff paste?
I tried everything to remove that from my tub, but then I poured some cleaning vinegar and let it soak for a couple of hours – and it worked like a charm!
I had to plug the bathtub and let it sit for a while. Mine was positioned close to the drain so I didn’t need to fill it up much. If you have to fill it up more, you might need to use extra vinegar or perhaps try adding water
Hey there, Bon Ami.
‘t forget about Bar Keepers Friend for cleaning.
Consider contacting a company like Miracle Method to have it professionally refinished – as a real estate agent, I’ve found that DIY jobs don’t always last.
Try using a magic eraser, some Bar Keepers Friend, and a little elbow grease.
If your surface looks worn out, make sure to ventilate the area well before attempting to clean it with muriatic acid. Remember to wear your rubber gloves. Apply the acid, let it sit for a few minutes, scrub with a brush, and rinse thoroughly. ‘t forget to protect your hands and eyes with gloves and eye gear.
You won’t believe how much of a difference Wet and Forget can make!
The enamel is starting to wear thin on the reglaze, giving it a dirty appearance.

Have you tried that lime cleaner from Home Depot? It’s seriously amazing! You might need to use it a few times, but just spray it, let it soak, and then scrub away. It works wonders, especially for those really dirty houses. You can only find it at Home Depot, and the bottle has green and black on it.
Make sure to also wear rubber gloves
You might consider hiring someone to perform an electro bond
I’ve also sanded down tubs and refinished them. It’s tough work and I wouldn’t suggest attempting a DIY installation though
For a bit of grit, try using baking soda. Mix it with a little water to form a paste and apply it to the dark spots. Allow it to sit for about 30 minutes before scrubbing with a sponge. Rinse off any baking soda residue in the tub (if it becomes clumpy, it may clog the drain). Baking soda is also excellent for cleaning toilets!
When it comes to reglazing, it’s best to enlist the services of a contractor who possesses professional materials and spray equipment. I used to attempt it on my own, only to realize I’d have to redo it whenever a tenant moved out. Hiring a professional typically results in a finish that lasts 7-8 years. It’s a worthwhile investment.
You have the option to bring in tub reglazers to your home and have them apply the glaze, or you can opt to purchase a glazing kit from the store. It’s pretty straightforward as long as you carefully follow the instructions and don’t skimp on the elbow grease. Make sure to thoroughly clean the tub before starting with the chemicals included in the kit. It’s not a difficult task. Just be mindful of any drips when using standard spray cans. I’ve tackled many tubs this way.
Make sure to tape off all of your hardware before reglazing, then use a razor knife to cut around it neatly. This will help the glaze come right up to the edges smoothly.
Cleaner for the toilet bowl.
Consider professional reglazing for the best results.
For a thorough cleaning, make sure to wear gloves when using the toilet bowl cleaner. Keep scrubbing with a small hand cloth mop until the product works its magic.
No water at all
