How can I detect and shut down a broken pipe leak in my yard irrigation system to save on water costs in San Diego?

I have a pretty good yard sprinkler system set up with 3/4″ Schedule 80 PVC. Water in San Diego can be pricey, so I’m thinking about adding some kind of automatic leak detection and shut off. I’ve been considering an excess flow solenoid, but I haven’t been able to find one yet. Any ideas on how to spot and stop a pipe leak would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Neal
