How can I creatively address the cracked and uneven concrete slab in an 80-year-old cottage in regional Queensland without reconcreting?

Hey there, I could use some advice! I’m thinking about buying this cute old cottage in regional Queensland that’s about 80 years old. The builder mentioned that the concrete slab it’s sitting on might be cracked and uneven in the lounge/living area, and the carpet in there isn’t looking too hot. I was thinking of tearing up the carpet and tiling the space, but without re-concreting (which might just crack again), I’d be left with floors that are too uneven to tile. Any creative suggestions? I was thinking of maybe smoothing out the existing concrete, filling in the cracks with resin, or even doing a tile mosaic to add a unique touch to the room. I’m planning to live in the house for a few years before selling, so I’ve got some time to play around with ideas. Any thoughts?

If you’re worried about slight imperfections or cracks in older structures, it might be best to avoid 80-100 year old buildings. Just make the most of your materials and budget.

In Remodel Construction, you can work with what you have. It doesn’t have to be flawless, but aiming for perfection is always a good idea.

In my opinion, if there are any issues with the floor, tile isn’t the best solution.

I’d suggest pulling up the carpet first to see what’s happening. It’s unlikely related to your floor. They might have poured a solid slab 80 years ago or a poor one. The only way to find out is to remove the carpet and check if it’s sturdy enough for tile installation.
