How can I cover up the unfinished drywall above the new door in my hallway so I can either paint it or tile it as is?

Hey, so the contractor kind of left the drywall like this above the new door in the hallway. Do you think it’s okay to leave it as is for tiling or should I try to fix it up before painting? Any suggestions on how to cover it up? I really needed the door for my dogs, but couldn’t afford to drywall all the way to the ceiling. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks so much!

DO NOT paint if you’re tiling!!!! Otherwise, you’ll need to spackle and paper tape. Sand, prime, and paint.

Have you considered priming before tiling? Otherwise, the drywall might soak up all the moisture from the adhesive, causing the tiles to fail quickly.

Did the contractor give you everything you requested?

Why not ask him to finish the job?

If you’re tiling up there, just use this… no preparation necessary.

Turn it into a transom window above.

It’s better to prime before tiling, but if it’s not a wet area, going straight to drywall is fine. I’d still prime first though.

If that was a ‘contractor’, they should consider a new career. Just look at that casing 😳
