How can I clean my HVAC ducts without hiring a professional company? I just noticed that my ducts are spitting out black stuff in my new bathroom. Do you think using a shop vac in each vent would do the trick?
It sounds like there may be insulation in your ducts that is breaking apart and being blown out of your vents.

I had a problem with black particles coming out of my vents. Stanley Steemer checked and said the ducts were fine, but they were actually rusting near the grills. I ended up putting grill filters on, but I needed to apply an anti-rust coating to the duct openings.
I totally agree with the person who commented below me. That explanation really hits the nail on the head.
I like to vacuum out my vents with a shop vac every now and then. It really helps with our indoor allergies.
