How can I adjust the damper door on older grates to remain in a desired position rather than just fully open or closed?

Does anyone have any tips on how to adjust the damper door on these old grates? Or is there some kind of accessory that can make them adjustable? The one in my son’s room just won’t stay in place – it’s either fully open or fully closed.
When I installed them, I had to make some adjustments because a few broke off. So, I just remove the screws, take off the grate, and manually adjust it by hand. I even used a piece of cardboard to prop it open to my desired position.
We went with a similar approach, placing a rod in the front of the grate to keep the flap open or closed. I’m curious if there’s a more sophisticated solution out there?
Oh, I was under the impression that I was the sole one facing this issue. My solution may not be glamorous, but it gets the job done.
Your idea is better than mine! I was considering using a long bolt attached to the outer grill with an automotive clip. Your deflector idea is a good one too.
I used 1 x 2 wood to minimize the chances of metal-on-metal rattling noises with my new forced air furnace. I created these wooden supports in the shape of a “T” with the end cut at a slight angle to match the desired flap angle. I simply used a zip-tie to secure them in place, and they have been effective in preventing any issues. Plus, they are much more convenient than a longer stick that could be a tripping hazard.
