How can I address the random chunk of doorframe in the floor of my 1950s Semi house that is bothering me, aside from the dated bathroom and toilet issues?

So, I recently moved from a brand new house to an older one (it’s a 1950s Semi) and there are a few things that bug me about it. The bathroom and toilet are pretty dated, but I can deal with those later. The one thing that really bothers me right now is this weird chunk of doorframe sticking out of the floor. Any ideas on what I can do about it? It’s driving me crazy! 😅

If you’re not planning on completely redoing the floors and removing the carpet, I’d steer clear. Replacing the floors would allow for a smooth transition, but otherwise, it might not be worth the effort. Transitioning from a new build to an older one is tough. We’ve been there too, and some things just aren’t worth the trouble haha.

It seems like there’s a transition board in there since the carpet is lower than the ‘wood’ floors. You might not be able to remove it completely, but you could sand it down to the bare wood and try staining it to match the wood flooring beside it. That way, it wouldn’t stand out as a white strip.

Can you swap out the transition joint to match the flooring? It seems like they really went overboard with the painting on it…it should be one solid piece.

You know, I don’t think it’s all that bad! Maybe not my top choice or the best option, but it really doesn’t look that terrible!

Appreciate everyone’s input. Something to consider for the future. All the woodwork has definitely been painted before 😅. But there’s plenty of time to plan how to address that.

James Mccoy

You have the option to paint the threshold to coordinate with the carpet and flooring.

Elias Pedersen

It’s probably wood. Remove the finish to match the hardwood floor.

This is a piece used to bridge the gap between the two distinct types of flooring. I suggest taking it out and putting in a new one that complements the wood floor.

Seems like this was once an outside door that they expanded the house around. That part is most likely the door frame and can be taken out without much difficulty. Just make it even with the carpeted side and find a piece from a nearby closet or somewhere else for a free solution.
