How can I address rusting pillars with missing stucco before repainting my house?

I’m planning to repaint my house, but I’ve noticed that the stucco is gone on the pillars and they’re starting to rust at the bottom. Any advice on what I should do before I start painting?

To fix those spots, I’d recommend applying some patches and using an oil-based primer on the rust prior to painting.

To prevent rust from reappearing, apply oil primer to seal the affected areas after using the stucco patch. You can also use an oil primer or a masonry primer after patching.

I’ve had great results with primer from a reputable paint supply store like Rodda. You may not even need to completely remove all the rust before applying it. The primer converts the rust and provides a protective coating. I used it on 4″ pilings under a two-story deck we constructed in 2007, and the rust hasn’t resurfaced. Initially, I used a reddish rust-colored oil primer followed by a latex exterior top coat.

You can find stucco patch at any major home improvement store. Consider using Zinsser or a similar oil-based primer.

Hey , if there’s any exposed metal, you should sand and prime it first. After that, patch up the holes. Also, prime any areas with rust stains.
