Has anyone successfully painted a subway tile backsplash and can offer advice on how to ensure it holds up well over time?

Has anyone here ever tried painting a subway tile backsplash? I did some research and it seems like it’s possible, but I’m a bit worried about how well it will last. Any advice or suggestions?

For excellent adhesion, Stix is the top choice for a primer. However, durability may not be its strongest suit. If left undisturbed, it can endure for a decent amount of time. Consider using Command for the topcoat.

To remove the glaze, try using a metal sanding disk before priming. This method usually helps the paint hold better. The duration of its appearance may vary, but a quality paint can prolong its lifespan.

Are you thinking about painting the backsplash or the walls? I’m just curious because it seems to be in great condition and quite neutral.😊

Ella Garcia

It’s the backsplash! I’m just not a fan of how neutral it is, I suppose! Haha. Our house is a basic builder’s model, so everything is in shades of gray 🥲

Thinks painting a tile backsplash could withstand the test of time: best of luck!!

High gloss enamel is long-lasting and easy to clean.

Mentioned it might not stick well to tile

Was suggesting using backsplash? It’s not as if anyone is stepping on it. I cleaned mine with a scotch pad that had tomato sauce on it. It’s sturdy enough for a temporary fix until you decide to renovate

The type of tile you’re referring to is called glazed subway tile. If you want a different color, the best option would be to remove the current tile and replace it with one that you like. Painting glazed tile is not recommended because the bond won’t hold.

In my experience, painting tile never seems to last, no matter how well you prepare. If you want to add some flair and durability, I suggest re-grouting with a fun color! It’s a cost-effective upgrade that will last without needing new tiles.

I tried out Heirloom Traditions all-in-one paint and used it on my project! It’s holding up really well.

If I were to try this out, I would consider using Tub & Tile paint, or I have heard about using appliance paint – might be worth looking into.

Albert Larsen

I have been painting for over 30 years and while you can paint almost anything, not everything should be painted, especially tile. If you decide to go for it, the Rust-Oleum tub and tile kit is the way to go, but I would recommend saving up until you can afford to retile.

Malou Petersen

Do not.

Take a look at PPG Breakthrough

Hey all, I appreciate all of your support! I think I’ll opt for the peel and stick tile cover to avoid any potential mess or issues with bonding or durability down the road.

Remember, just because you have the ability to do something doesn’t always mean it’s the best choice.
