Has anyone here successfully stained fiberglass, like a front door or beams, and can offer advice or tips?

Has anyone ever stained fiberglass before? Specifically, like on a front door or fiberglass beams?

After 20 years, I decided to redo my front door. It’s in a shaded area and doesn’t face much harsh weather. I used an orange gel stripper, gel stain, and Outdoor Marine-grade Poly to seal it. It turned out to be one of the simpler projects I’ve undertaken.

Yup

Yup, I had to opt for gel stains.

When staining fiberglass doors, keep in mind that it doesn’t absorb stain like wood does. I can guide you through the process, but be cautious to avoid mistakes. 1) Prepare the door with a lint-free cloth. 2) Ensure the stain is well mixed and consider using a foam brush. 3) Apply the stain in a circular motion with the foam brush, working it into the grain pattern. Take your time for an even coat. 4) Use a fresh foam brush to smooth the stain in the direction of the grain. Patience is key as fiberglass requires time. Avoid wiping off excess stain. 5) Use a soft paintbrush to blend out any streaks or marks, especially around corners. If there’s excess stain, clean it with a lint-free cloth. 6) Once the door is uniformly stained to your liking, allow it to dry for 24 to 48 hours. 7) Before applying a second coat, check for any dust or lint. 8) Apply the second coat following the grain, just like the first coat. Allow the door to dry completely. Consider adding at least two coats of polyurethane – interior polyurethane for the inside and UV polyurethane for the exterior side of the door. Apply polyurethane in the same manner as before. Let it dry, and your job is complete 🙂 If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Best of luck!

For fiberglass doors, you can apply a gel stain. Simply add a clear coat on top for protection.
