Do I need to use any glue or lubricant with these fernco fittings?
Nope, you just need a clamp on either side.
Explained that the Ty Seal is specifically made for fitting into a cast iron hub.
This is an easy-to-use gasket meant for a cast iron hub transitioning to PVC. Just add a bit of grease, insert it, and you’re good to go.
Initially mistook the part in the picture for a temporary end cap, but upon closer inspection, realized it was actually a transition seal with visible ribs. He admitted to needing coffee for better judgement. He acknowledged that a little lubrication, pushing the parts together, and everything will work smoothly. He also expressed surprise at missing this detail.
Confirmed that his initial thought matches the situation, but had to make an upgrade from 1 inch PVC to 2 inch over a 40ft distance which made the cast iron connection challenging.
Let’s remove the PVC and insert it into the cast hub, then make sure to lubricate it well. You might need a board and hammer to fully secure the PVC, even though fitting 2 inches usually isn’t difficult.
Try using dish soap.
I’d recommend applying some silicone to it.
That PVC pipe is a bit larger than the cast iron one. The rubber piece is specifically designed for connecting service weight cast iron to a cast iron hub. If you manage to successfully remove the old insert from the hub, you can insert the PVC directly into the cast iron hub and fill it with backer rod. In the past, old timers used butcher’s twine for this, but large butcher’s twine is hard to find nowadays. Alternatively, you can use horsehair. Make sure to leave 3/8 inch at the top and fill it with Sikaflex. Remember to wear gloves and spray a little WD40 on your gloved finger to prevent it from sticking while smoothing out the top of the hub.
I often come across these in shower drain pads that are 2 inches in size. I simply push it down around the pipe until it reaches the bottom, and I’ve never encountered any issues.
