Considering updating your 1970s era home’s railing – any advice on the process and whether to DIY or hire professionals?

Hey, has anyone ever tackled updating or swapping out an outdoor railing before? Any advice on what’s involved? We recently bought a house from the 1970s and the railings are not looking their best (they’re loose and the finish is fading). I’m trying to plan out our renovations and decide what we should hire professionals for versus DIY.

Would you mind swapping out the ballusters for sleek flat black aluminum ones?

You can purchase them from Amazon. I included the design in the center for a more personalized appearance.

That’s quite a bit of wood to work on.

What do you think about white gel stain? It might give a nice look.

I’ve actually used outside mount balusters for this:

Hey Dan, how did you manage to accomplish this? Did you replace the spindles or just give them a new finish? Also, did you expand the base?

Lincoln Moore

Confirmed, all new balusters, handrails, newels, etc. After removing the balusters, I sanded, filled, and skimmed the apron (where there were holes from the side-mounted balusters) with bondo. I created small false treads for the balusters to rest on and prevent the carpet from warping at the end of the step. It’s a bit unique, but it does the job!

I appreciate the information! Any chance you’re in Wisconsin?

Dan really likes those square steps

Sorry, , I don’t think so!

Thank you so much, ! 🙏
