Considering replacing a galvanized drain line with ABS, any advice on making the switch and sealing the connection to the main DWV stack?

Hey everyone,

So, I’ve got this 1-1/2″ galvanized drain line for the tub and sink in my bathroom that keeps getting clogged up. I’m in the middle of remodeling the bathroom and I’m thinking of swapping it out for ABS instead. Right now, it’s connected to the main DWV stack with a lead and oakum seal. My plan is to eventually box in the exposed plumbing and finish up that part of the basement.

Any thoughts or suggestions on how to go about this?

I’m considering a few options:
– Cut off the 1-1/2″ pipe, leaving a bit of a stub, clean it out as best as I can, and then use a heavy-duty seal coupling.
– Drill out the lead and attempt to remove the whole pipe, then use a compression joint seal (never tried these before) and maybe even upgrade to a 2″ drain.
– Or, maybe just go all out and replace the whole stack 🙂

What do you guys think?

Swap out the stack if you plan on using it all up. Abs isn’t great, so maybe go with PVC instead. Just make sure it’s allowed in your local building codes.

Let’s go with the best choice – replacing the stack. The simplest way would be to cut it as close to the stack as possible and then connect it with an mj band. Your call!

‘t mess with the lead seal – it’s not worth the effort.

Replace the stack with a hub-less connection and use PVC to remove the branch.
