I don’t understand why there would be a neutral wire on the power side of the connection… unless it’s for a switch.

That’s a switch leg with a built-in switch. They’re simple to install with the right tool and tend to have fewer issues than regular switches in homes.
Is that the rear of a light fixture or an outlet? My guess is a light switch.
