Hey, quick question – we’re thinking of updating our siding. Can we just put vinyl siding over the metal siding we currently have? When we first moved in, we were told that’s how it could be done, but we want to double-check. We’re planning on doing it ourselves, so we want to make sure it’s as easy as possible. Thanks for any advice you can give!
What kind of siding do you currently have and what do you plan on replacing it with?
Annon metal siding, but looking to switch to vinyl.
Stripping it down is the way to go every time. It’s the right way to do the job and allows you to check for any damage from rot or insects.
You may consider selling it at a lower price or finding someone to assist you in removing it for use on a chicken coop, shed, or barn.
Remove the aluminum siding and recycle it for cash. Wrap the house with Tyvek or a similar air barrier. Apply tape to Tyvek seams and around windows to decrease air infiltration, then proceed to install your new vinyl siding.
Avoid layering one type of cladding over another. It can lead to problems down the line. Make sure there is proper air circulation by counter-battening all cladding.
Removing the old stuff is a breeze. Just fold the insulation and add the new siding.
Usually, it ends up being cheaper to go with the more expensive option.
