Can the cracked top pane of my double pane window be replaced separately or do I need to install a whole new window?

Hey, so my double pane window had the top inside pane crack for no apparent reason today. Do you think it’s possible to just replace the top half of the window, or would I have to install a whole new window?

If window panes suddenly crack, it’s often due to incorrect installation. I recommend opting for a new window and ensuring it is properly aligned and level.

Believes it was due to a sudden temperature change. The room was quite cold with negative temperatures. After leaving the room to warm up and returning, that’s when she noticed the crack.

It’s possible, but you’d probably see both inside panes crack since they were both affected by the same issue. I personally think it’s more likely an error during installation where too much pressure was applied to that pane, and the temperature change was just the final straw.

Kasper Takala

I don’t think there’s a lot of pressure. The window opens and closes really smoothly. No friction. I can easily open it with just one finger.

Hey , the structure may have contracted due to temperature. If the window was moving freely before, a sudden change could cause this. Heat rises, and the ambient temperature probably fluctuated

Our double pane patio door unexpectedly shattered on one side of the inside. We contacted a glass repair professional who was able to replace the broken side with a new double pane insert. Our door also shattered during a sudden record high temperature day.

Most glass supply stores usually have standard sizes in stock. You could bring in the window pane and have them replace it without the extra cost of a middleman.

There are companies that can replace double pane glass panels for around 300 to 500 dollars. It’s still more affordable than replacing the entire unit.

Oh, a rain scoop!

It’s actually pretty easy to replace, it just requires some time. I’ve tried out several styles before. Your local glass or window shop should have a new double pane ready within a few days. You can remove the trim around the glass easily. Just need to cut through the sticky adhesive. You can purchase double-sided adhesive foam in different thicknesses. Alternatively, you can just silicone it in place if the trim still fits snugly.

If you had argon gas in the low-e glass, it’s likely gone and the insulating properties are compromised. Not sure if glass replacement companies can recharge that. So, if it doesn’t bother you, take that option. But if it does, contact the manufacturer.

Hey , the return on that gas in the glass isn’t great…

Kasper Takala

Hey , I’m a bit concerned about repairing the crack on the window until I have new siding put in next year and then I can have a new one installed

Jasper Lende

Glass companies have the ability to replace only the glass.

As a landlord, I deal with tenants breaking windows frequently. Remove the top sash, temporarily fill the space with plywood or Styrofoam, and then bring the sash to a reliable glass company. They will disassemble it and install new glass.

It really comes down to what you’re looking for. If your window is custom-sized or a higher quality window, consider replacing the glass. If they’re just standard store-bought windows, opt for a replacement window.
