Hey there, can you please approve this? I have a tiling question. I need to put a tile in a 12 by 12-inch space, but the ones I’m looking at in the stores are thicker than the ones already there. Can I put one thick tile in the middle surrounded by thinner ones? Thanks.
It may not be the most visually appealing sight, but it won’t be any less attractive than the rest of the wall 😉
Ensure that the grouting is done properly. Complete the entire task when you have the time and resources.
You have the option to use a thicker material if you prefer. Look for something with a decorative or more interesting appearance compared to the other tiles. This will create a deliberate contrast. Aim to find a material with consistent color throughout to avoid rough edges.
Before installing new tile, double check that the wall is properly sealed.
You’ll need to use 4 x 6 inch tiles to match up with the current ones 🏴
Head over to your nearest thrift store. You might discover some hidden gems there.
Either or the Restore…
I’m not entirely sure what was done there, but I really hope that’s not drywall or drywall compound. Ideally, it should be cement board and mortar – fingers crossed. After that, you can go ahead and put up whatever tile you prefer. It all depends on the kind of finish/appearance you’re aiming for.
I appreciate it! The drywall holding the soap dish had fallen off, so I had to remove some tiles, add a wooden support, reattach the drywall, and seal it with a waterproof membrane and thinset.

Head over to Daltile, they’ve got a huge variety and those tiles definitely have that old Daltile look.
Absolutely a rare find – a 4×4 in gold.
You won’t believe the deals they can offer you at showrooms across the country with a helpful team.
Sorry, thicker tiles won’t work…duh
Maybe check out a reputable tile store instead of a big box.
It’s hard to make out from the photo, but when it comes to a repair like this, the old thinset usually needs to be chipped away so the tiles can be level. This tends to be a common issue, even if you have the exact same tile.
