Can I simply repaint the repaired roof leak, or is it necessary to sand or cut out the damaged area?

I need some advice on how to best fix this issue. I found and fixed a leak in the roof, and there doesn’t seem to be any other damage. It’s been dry for the past week, so can I just repaint it, or should I sand/cut it out first?
Use oil-based killz to hide the stain, tape, apply drywall mud and sand, then paint. Wait for the stain to stop spreading before taking action, or consider checking upstairs. You can also choose to cut out that part and patch up the drywall for a fun experience.
