Can I simply drywall over the existing walls in my fixer upper, or do they all need to be completely removed before installing new drywall?

So, in my first fixer upper, the walls are currently looking like this before you can even get to the studs. Do you think it’s possible to just put drywall over the top of this, or do we need to take it all out before putting up new drywall?

If I were you, I’d also post anonymously to ask a question like this 😂

The proper method would be to go down to the studs so future owners can easily locate them and properly secure the drywall. Alternatively, you can overlay it with 1/4 inch drywall. I frequently see flippers in my area doing that.

I say keep the wood! It will definitely help reinforce the structure, making your walls sturdier! Definitely keep it!

I took mine out. It trapped odors, insects, and potentially concealed damage.

How level is the surface? Seems like it could be a challenge to avoid damaging the drywall if the boards are uneven in thickness.

Put up drywall directly over it. et some electric box extensions, and install 1/2 inch by 3/4 inch trim around the windows and doors.
