Can I replace a ceiling fan with recessed lighting and a dimmer switch without rewiring the wall?

We’re turning the upstairs room into a TV room that used to belong to our teenager. There’s a ceiling fan with a light in the middle of the room.

I’m thinking of taking out the ceiling fan and light to put in 6-8 LED recessed lights instead. Do you think I can use the power wire that was connected to the fan for the recessed lighting? And I’d like to switch to a dimmer switch. Do you think this plan will work without having to install a new gang box and wiring down the wall?

You have a few options here. You can either use the existing box as a starting point for running new cable to the LEDs, which would involve adding a cover plate to the box, or make sure the box is accessible from the attic side. Another option is to run the cable from the existing light to an LED box, and then extend from there. Just keep in mind that LED boxes typically only allow for a maximum of two 14/2 wires, one in and one out.

Appreciates it! Discovering new things. It’s fascinating to learn about the possibilities.

Sure thing! Those wafer lights with the attached handy box are great.

Nope, everything’s all good.
