Can I pour a small concrete slab with footers to extend the bumpout for the chimney without bearing too much weight?

I’m not a fan of how the bumpout for the chimney doesn’t reach all the way to the ground. Do you think it would be possible to pour a small concrete slab with footers that connects to the existing foundation, then frame between the slab and chimney, and finally sheath and side as necessary? I don’t think the slab needs to be super sturdy since it won’t be holding much weight. This photo is old because I’ve already taken down the deck and am getting ready to redo the siding on the house.

You are right.
However, I recommend using that designated area…maybe for storage?

Jordão Peixoto

Maybe just a simple concrete slab, or even pavers on top of gravel, and then transform it into a small storage shed.

Éric Joly

My idea would be to frame it and convert it into a storage closet.

Noelle Tipparti

You could consider moving the stairs to create a larger door for the storage area. Alternatively, you could open up the wall from the inside or have a narrow door that opens outward to the side.

I agree with the suggestion to use it for storage. Let’s make the most of the space.

Janik Greijdanus

Enclose it to use as storage

Elias Pedersen

A floating concrete slab or 4 footers should be sufficient since they only support the frame and siding to hide the cantilevered chimney. If you want to use it for storage, consider leaving it open on the inside (like a closet) to maintain the appearance of a floating chimney from the exterior.

Margarita Blanco

So are you thinking of adding a ‘faux’ extension? Personally, I think it might look odd to have the extension visible from the outside but no fireplace inside.

Elias Pedersen

Just to let you know, there’s a fireplace on the inside. It’s located on the upper level of the duplex.

Ceyhan Körmükçü

If the structure will touch the ground, it’s important to have a foundation that extends below the frost line to avoid any potential heaving issues. Avoid going for a simple slab.

Violeta Adamović

Not sure if it’s just the photo, but that siding appears to be in rough shape from top to bottom

Igor Gripich

That sounds like a perfect spot to incorporate some extra storage, accessible from indoors. Are you planning on reinforcing it well to function as a mini closet?

Ronja Kallio

If it were me, I’d build down from the chimney, enclosing the lower two feet to prevent frost heaving.

Nikolina Pavić

How about adding some visible wooden knee supports instead?

Samuel Rudi

That sounds like a great location for an outdoor storage unit.

Tilde Madsen

The storage concept is appealing, but I also believe that incorporating a mid-level second deck during the deck renovation would optimize the space and enhance the overall appearance of the outdoor area.

Amelia Kowalski

Consider wrapping the new deck around to underneath the window to create a seamless look.

Mestan Günday

I often see this design – a cantilevered floor extension. Many homeowners choose to maintain the existing structure, even when adding white siding to the corners. If there are no structural issues, I wouldn’t recommend changing it.

Extending it downward? Consider adding a small access door underneath the house for storage. You could store gardening tools, BBQ utensils, or folding chairs there. If you insulate it, you could even open up the wall inside the house to create recessed bookshelves or a closet. Since it’s likely a load-bearing wall, adding a beam and additional studs for support will be necessary. Luckily, a short beam shouldn’t be too pricey, and you might even find a leftover piece at a construction site.

بهار قاسمی

If it’s properly supported now, you don’t even need footers. Just lay a slab, then build whatever you want underneath – it could be a great little storage shed.

Maxime Leijssen

If you’re already going through all that trouble, you might as well consider adding a cleanout at the base of the chimney pipe. Keep in mind that old concrete won’t bond well with new concrete, so drilling holes in the foundation and inserting rebar before pouring the slab can prevent future movement or sinking.

Angie Stewart

Make sure to dig deep enough for the piers so it stays put over time. Once it’s finished, it can easily function as a shed. Add some doors for outside access and store your patio furniture inside.

If you decide to connect it to the house, that’s a whole different ball game. You’ll need a permit as it becomes an extension, requiring approval from the town on various aspects like footing, framing, electrical, and plumbing. It might get costly for a 3×4′ extension. And while you can technically proceed without permits, keep in mind that it could void your insurance in case of any issues due to lack of Certificate of Occupancy.

Blanca Marrero

I’m in favor of the shed idea.

Suhasini Saniel

In my opinion, creating a comprehensive landscaping plan is key. Simply working on the chimney alone won’t add much value to your home. Adding lattice under the porch, along with some plantings/shrubs, could achieve more with less effort!

Utz Arnold

Storage. I mean, if you’re already putting in the effort, might as well add a door to make it practical.

Dario Barros

Is the one who mentioned this!

Nemanja Srejović

Why does it have to absorb water from the ground?

Rayan Denis

I would construct it with framing and siding like a roof, but include doors for storing barbecue accessories, outdoor toys, and other items to keep clutter out of sight.

Tarak Ramesh

What’s the purpose of a foundation?

Edir Nogueira

Tool shed

Nicola Chevalier

Simply build a frame and transform it into a storage shed

Jordan Johnston

If your basement has a slope in that area, it may need to be filled. Make sure to consider frost in your design. Talk to the local building department about it.

Create a small closet for storing items

Maja Lagrand

You can avoid going all the way to the ground and spending time and money on a footing. Just frame down to the bottom of the existing siding and add a soffit underneath. The structure won’t be too heavy, especially with some thin flat metal strips for added support.
