Can I mix different types of slate for repairs on my roof, or is there a reason to stick with Scotch slate besides aesthetics?

Hey there DIYers! I have a question about slate roofs. Do you think it’s necessary to use Scotch slate specifically for repairs, or is it okay to mix in Welsh or Spanish slate as well? Besides the appearance, is there any other reason to stick with Scotch slate? I can’t see any practical difference other than maybe the thickness of the slate, but let me know if I’m overlooking something. Just a heads up, I’m not looking for safety advice. Thanks!

The source of your slate doesn’t really matter. It’s best to have consistent thickness.
One of the properties I oversee has recently installed thin slate. It keeps breaking and coming loose.

Awesome, I appreciate the info

I wouldn’t attempt DIY slate repairs.. the other slate might be fragile or barely holding on ..and then you could fall. I’ve witnessed this happen to a neighbor.. even cedar roofs can be very risky..

I mentioned in the post that I’m not seeking safety advice, but I appreciate your concern.
