Can I install built-in shelves behind one of my fireplaces that face different rooms on the same wall?

Hey! So, I’ve got 2 fireplaces in my place. They’re both on the same wall, but one faces one room and the other faces a different room. They’re not directly back to back, but more like next to each other. I’m wondering if it’s possible for me to add built-in shelves behind one of the fireplaces (specifically the one in the den). If I were in the living room, the shelves would be next to the fireplace. Any thoughts on this?

Natural gas or propane? When it comes to clearance to combustibles, it’s a concern for both options.

I’m with Sean on this one. Can we see each fireplace along with the wall they’re in? Are they traditional masonry fireplaces or the more modern metal ‘zero clearance’ ones?
