Can I expand my plywood to create more attic space and should I brace it to support the weight like the current platform?

Hey, I could use your thoughts on something. I’m a bit bummed about the attic space in my house given its size. The furnace placement is really limiting our storage options. Do you think it would be possible to extend the plywood flooring to the areas I’ve marked out? Also, I haven’t actually measured, but it seems like the platform supporting the furnace and current attic space is raised a bit, probably for added support. Do you think it would be necessary to brace the new space if I expand it?
Those trusses are designed to carry the right amount of weight. It’s not advisable to use them for storage and increase the weight load.
You’ve got a truss roof. The bottom cord won’t be able to support much weight. The platform for the furnace blower was made to hold the weight. The attic space in a truss roof system is nearly non-existent and not usable.
Adding more storage shouldn’t be an issue! I’m sure you’re not looking to store heavy bags of concrete up there!
I’ve heard that in some parts of the country, they often install the furnace in the attic. I always thought they were typically on the main floor or in the crawl space/basement, since heat tends to rise. It seems counterintuitive to put the heater above the heated areas, doesn’t it?
You definitely need to strengthen the entire attic floor. If you’re thinking about removing any truss formations, it’s a good idea to consult with an engineer. You might also need to reinforce the attic floor below if you’re planning on adding a room or placing heavy items up there.
