Hey there! I need some advice on sprucing up these old posts that are rotting. The house came like this, and the stairs are a bit shaky too. I’m not very handy, but I’m willing to give it a shot and learn. Any quick DIY fixes you can recommend? If you have any pictures to help, that would be awesome! And please excuse the mess. Thanks so much!
Simply cut off the damaged sections and install metal post supports for reinforcement.
You can purchase Simpson post anchors made of galvanized metal, which may be tall enough to replace the damaged portion of the posts. Otherwise, consider replacing the posts entirely.
Considering adding another post or reinforcing with sistered 2x4s to maintain deck stability during post replacement. Follow cjmac’s advice on installing metal supports to prevent water damage. It may be a hassle, but it’s necessary.
Provide temporary support for the weight above, remove the decayed post, pour concrete above ground level for drainage and support, and secure a new post to bear the load.
CJ makes a good point. That deck is just waiting to collapse. Temporarily support it, cut out the rot, and add a sturdy metal support.
