Can a voltage tester detect power in a plug even if it’s not actually working when connected?

Hey there, I’m new to this and was wondering if I can connect this plug to make it work properly. The voltage tester indicates that there is power, but when I connect it, there doesn’t seem to be any power coming out of the plug.

Make sure that if it’s a FCI outlet, the wires are connected to the screws labeled LINE on the back of the outlet, while the other end says load.

If the exhaust fan is switch-controlled, chances are it goes through a switch. But if the fan is powered directly with a switch leg, it might be a different story. If there isn’t a breaker for that circuit, then there may be some more serious issues at play.
Only has a light switch and no breaker to turn it off

Looks like your wire is damaged and shorted out. This is why you can measure voltage but it won’t work when you connect something to it because it’s shorted out. 😅
You’ll need to replace it with a new good wire. ✌🏼
Yes, also the red one, but the red sometimes flickers, so I used black instead

Hey there! I’m having trouble understanding what you want to do. Can you explain it better for me?

Check the voltage on the hot and neutral wires using a meter, then let me know the readings. If you have the right power, you should be able to reset the gfci. Your hook on the neutral wire is facing the wrong direction – make sure to rotate it clockwise so it closes properly when you tighten the screw. And if you’re using a Phillips drill, follow up with a hand-tightened flathead screwdriver for extra security. Add a ground screw and a pigtail to the metal box to ground the gfci, using the armored casing as your ground wire. This type of wire is common in older homes. Use a voltage meter to check for a ground – place one lead on the hot wire and the other on the inside of the metal box. ood luck!
Currently doesn’t have a voltage meter. When connected to ground, no power is detected on the black wire, even though the ground has power

So, if you ever need to work on something with power running through it and you want to stay safe without touching anything live with your bare hands, you can get class 00 gloves on amazon. I always keep a pair in my work truck, along with a set of white leather gloves to go over them for extra protection. Remember, messing up your heart rhythm is serious stuff, so be safe. Welcome to the sparky life! 💪🤙

It might just be a switch leg without a neutral

I’m willing to bet the FCI just needs to be reset.
You should replace that box. An 1110 JB box like that isn’t suitable for a device if there are cable entries on the sides.
Do you know what the voltage is and if it’s switched, as well as what else is on the circuit?
Believes it’s the end of an exhaust fan without a breaker switch
It’s best to contact an electrician
Your gfi outlet needs a ground to function properly.
Of course it will.
I tried connecting the ground too, but it still didn’t work.
I only possess a voltage tester, not a multi-meter. I don’t think there’s enough voltage.
Indeed it will
However, the push-to-test button won’t function without a ground. The device will still operate.
Are you feeling a bit high?
It will continue to function
You should consider going back to school! 🤣
The test button should work just fine. FCIs measure the difference between the hot and neutral
Kent nope. Want a brownie?
Hahahaha. Yes, it will. Do you have any idea what causes a FCI to trip?
How are you planning to fit that device into the box? LOL
Go ahead and run a MC wire

Remove this and redo it correctly
Is old, from years ago…

Notes that neutrals lack power, only the black and red wires have power. The red wire seems to switch on and off
