“Any advice on fixing a broken window after a rookie DIY mishap?”

I accidentally threw a domino and it broke the window in the place I’m renting. I’d really like to fix it, but I’m a total newbie when it comes to DIY stuff. Any help would be awesome!

Bring it to a glass and shower or window and door specialist. Have them handle it for you.

You’ll have to replace that part of the window. There is a vacuum seal between the panes, so you can’t just replace the pane.

If it’s a single pane, however, a double pane has a vacuum.

Sure, one option could be to take it apart, replace the glass, and then take it to a professional who can remove the air and replace it, but that might not be the most practical solution.

Typically, the best approach is to replace the sealed unit that contains both panes.

Gabriel Sanz

That’s the way I do it – I don’t just replace one pane. I remove the entire sash, have a glass company create a new complete unit with both panes, and vacuum it out before installing.

Gabriel Sanz

Head to the outside of the window and locate the retaining trim sections. Remove them, measure, and contact a glass company to create new glass. You can also search for sash replacement on windows on YouTube.

Replace the Insulated glass unit. Any glass shop can place an order for a replacement for you. If you have the manufacturer’s information, home improvement stores can also order a replacement for you.

Were the windows recently replaced? Do you know which brand they are? Certain brands come with a warranty. I actually ended up putting a hammer through our new window (fun story haha.) The manufacturer sent a technician from the warranty team, and they repaired it at no cost.

I removed the entire window from the frame and brought it to a window repair shop. They replaced the glass with a new double pane section and now it looks brand new. This was my second time doing it. The first time was about 10 or 12 years ago and it cost $60, but this time they wanted $120. Not sure how much is inflation and how much is just finding a good deal the first time.

Easy fix. It just takes some time. You’ll need a stapler for trimming though.
