Is it necessary to replace my 38 year old oil tank in the basement due to potential issues like surface rust, even though it’s been problem-free so far?

Hey, so my oil tank in the basement is pushing 38 years old, no issues so far. Do you know if there’s a way to check it out before any potential problems arise? It gets pretty damp down there in the summer, but I do have a dehumidifier running most of the time. Noticed some surface rust as well. Thinking maybe it’s time to consider replacing it due to its age. What do you think?

Check under the tank for leaks, they tend to occur there. If you notice a leak, you can temporarily cover it with a magnetic patch until you replace the tank.

Your fuel company might be able to inspect the tank for you, possibly for free. But with the current situation, it might not be free anymore.

I just replaced my tank last week, it was 56 years old! Best decision ever! They are supposed to last 25 years, but they tend to deteriorate from the inside out.

How is it possible for a tank filled with oil to deteriorate from the inside?

Sludge retains moisture. The combination of bacteria and moisture causes them to decay internally. They seem fine at first, but eventually fail, resulting in 200 gallons of oil on the floor. My original mine is due for a replacement. Applying mild pressure on the flathead could easily turn it into Swiss cheese from below.

You’re running out of time.
