Have any of you successfully lightened the color of solid core doors without sanding or stripping them?

Hey guys! We’re knee-deep in renovating our 1980s house and one dilemma I’m facing is what to do with these solid core doors. Initially, I was thinking of painting them, but I always hesitate when it comes to painting wood because of a funny memory from my childhood involving helping my mom strip paint off a dresser 🤣

I’m really into the modern farmhouse/coastal/rustic decor vibe and I’m leaning towards a lighter wood stain. However, I’d love to skip the whole stripping and sanding process if possible. Has anyone here ever successfully lightened the color of wood without starting from scratch? I saw a photo that inspired me (not mine) and I’m wondering if tinted lacquer could help tone down the red and make it lighter, maybe with a green/gray tint. I’ve also heard of paint washing and I’m curious if that could work too. I’d appreciate any personal experiences or advice you guys might have!

Thanks a bunch!
